Saudi Arabia Data Centre Project – Backup Power

Saudi Arabia Data Centre Project – Backup Power

Project Summary

Location – Saudi Arabia
Application – Backup Power
Sector Data Centre
Power Supplied – 30mVA

Enrogen was tasked with designing, supplying, and installing a critical backup power system for a new, high-security data centre. This facility is central to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, playing a pivotal role in supporting the digital transformation of public and private sectors. A reliable backup power system was necessary to mitigate risks of downtime, ensure uninterrupted operations, and protect sensitive data.

Project Overview

The data centre, developed by a global leader in advanced co-location services, required a dependable and scalable backup power system. Without it, even brief power outages could result in significant losses in data transactions, service disruptions, and reputational damage.

Enrogen’s Role

Enrogen was chosen for its expertise in delivering high-quality solutions for mission-critical infrastructures. The system needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing setup while meeting stringent operational, scalability, and environmental standards.

The Solution

Enrogen delivered a fully customised backup power system comprising:

  • Twelve 2.5MVA Mitsubishi 16-cylinder engines paired with Leroy Somer alternators for durability and scalability.
  • Acoustic containers engineered to prevent sand ingress, suitable for the harsh desert environment.
  • 50.5C Design at 100% Data Center Continuous Rating
  • Custom fuel system:
    • Bulk belly tanks (23,100L capacity) under each enclosure.
    • Day tanks (1,224L capacity) within each generator enclosure.
    • Total fuel storage: 291,888L across 12 sets, providing extended runtime.

Cooling System

Roof-mounted remote radiators with electric fans ensured sufficient airflow and optimal operation at high temperatures.

Frequency Adaptation

The system was designed to operate at 60Hz, meeting specific regional requirements.

Challenges and Solutions

Logistics

  • Navigating regulatory requirements for international shipping.
  • Coordinating with local authorities and customs ensured smooth and timely delivery.

Environmental Conditions

  • Designed to dry bulb temperatures of 50.5°C necessitated enhanced cooling systems.
  • Equipment installation was performed during cooler nighttime conditions to ensure safety and efficiency.

Complexity of Installation

  • The team overcame challenges through precise scheduling and adaptive planning, delivering on time and to specification.

Impact and Achievements

The backup power system has consistently prevented power disruptions, maintaining the data centre’s operational stability. This reliability ensures uninterrupted public cloud services and data security across the region.

Awards

The project’s success garnered Tier 3 Uptime Awards, recognizing excellence in design, construction, and operational sustainability:

  • Tier 3 Certification of Design Documents
  • Tier 3 Certification of Constructed Facility
  • Tier 3 Silver Certification of Operational Sustainability

This project underscores Enrogen’s commitment to delivering robust, scalable power solutions in the most demanding environments.
